Ronan Farrow, son of Woody Allen and Mia Farrow, has written a guest column for The Hollywood Reporter that highlights many issues facing sex abuse victims. Mr. Farrow’s experience is that of a victim’s brother. His sister, Dylan, penned an open letter published in 2014 by the New York Times.
Ronan’s column holds a mirror up to journalists, including himself, for how they responded to Dylan’s letter detailing grooming and sex abuse by Woody Allen. Dylan had stated in her open letter that “Woody Allen is a living testament to the way our society fails the survivors of sexual assault and abuse.” Ronan now provides an insightful and heartfelt column detailing the hurdles that Dylan and many sex abuse victims face and how even a sympathetic journalist brother could have done more to help.
One of the issues that Ronan highlights is how the Hollywood machine has insulated Woody Allen. Sex abuse victims often end up defending themselves against their abusers whether it is Woody Allen or other people in positions of authority. As Salon.com highlights, the Hollywood machine is still backing Woody Allen and has barred journalists from The Hollywood Reporter from activities at the current Cannes Film Festival.
